The i+LAB αTHAL IC Strip Test from i+MED Laboratories is a rapid, visually read lateral flow immunoassay designed to detect Hb Bart’s, a key biomarker found in individuals with alpha thalassemia syndromes. This includes carriers of alpha thalassemia 1, Hb H disease, Hb Bart’s hydrops fetalis, and homozygous alpha thalassemia 2.
How It Works
The test uses a monoclonal antibody that binds specifically to Hb Bart’s in hemolysed whole blood. A coloured band appears on the test strip to indicate a positive result, while a control line confirms the test has functioned correctly. Results are available within minutes, with no need for specialised equipment.

Clinical Performance
Validated across multiple centers, the i+LAB αTHAL IC Strip Test demonstrates:
- 100% sensitivity and 73.1% specificity for alpha thalassemia 1
- 97.4% sensitivity and 93% specificity for alpha thalassemia 1 and homozygous alpha thalassemia 2
