C-reactive protein (CRP) is a widely used analyte in healthcare, but do you know why it’s beneficial to measure CRP using point-of-care (POC) testing?

CRP is a protein produced by the liver. It is present in healthy individuals at low concentrations, but the level increases quite rapidly when there is inflammation in the body.

The level of CRP begins to increase just a few hours after the initial stimulus. This makes it a useful indicator of infection and inflammation. In turn, when the infection or inflammation settles, the CRP level rapidly decreases back to normal. Measuring CRP aids in differentiation of mild and severe infections, and in monitoring the course of infection or inflammation.

POC CRP diagnostics, such as Aidian’s QuikRead go®, provide results from a simple fingerprick sample during patient consultation, as opposed to laboratory CRP testing. When the findings are available in minutes, there are numerous advantages:

  • Increased diagnostic confidence in acute infections.
  • Aid in deciding if antibiotics are needed, and also communicating this to the patient.
  • Reduction in unnecessary antibiotic prescribing.
  • Evaluation of the infection course.
